# iPhone Fold Teardown: iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8 for Buyers

**Short answer:** iFixit tore down Apple's first foldable, the $1,999 iPhone Duo, and gave it a provisional 5/10 repair score, the best for any foldable so far. Its hinge gathered less dust than the Galaxy Z Fold8's, but an out-of-warranty inner screen costs $999.

**Takeaway:** The iPhone Duo is the most repairable foldable iFixit has scored and undercuts the Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra by $100, but a $999 inner screen and a hinge that still crunches with dust make AppleCare close to mandatory.

**Key figures (as reported by the source):**
- iFixit provisional repair score: 5/10
- Inner display replacement (out of warranty): $999
- Starting price (Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra: $2,099): $1,999

Apple's first foldable, the iPhone Duo (the phone most people have been searching for as the Apple iPhone Fold), has been opened up, and the most interesting part is not the screen. It is the glue. In its [iPhone Duo teardown](https://www.ifixit.com/News/119895/iphone-duo-teardown), iFixit gave the phone a provisional repairability score of 5 out of 10, the highest it has handed any foldable so far. That changes the iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8 question, because with a $1,999 phone, what happens after a bad drop matters as much as the spec sheet.

The catch is a single number: replacing the inner folding display out of warranty costs $999, according to iFixit. Half the price of the phone, for one part.

Below: how a folding iPhone works inside, what the teardown says about repair, how it compares with Samsung's and Google's foldables on the points actually tested, and who should buy now versus wait.

### iPhone Fold teardown: what did iFixit find inside the iPhone Duo?

Apple unveiled the iPhone Duo on September 9, 2026 as its first foldable iPhone, [BGR reported](https://bgr.com/2254151/apple-iphone-duo-foldable-price-release-date-specs). For anyone tracking the iPhone Fold release, pre-orders opened on October 16 in more than 70 countries and sales began October 23. iFixit published its teardown two days later.

The headline findings, in short:

- **A complicated hinge.** Gears, springs and linked metal joints. Apple says it has more than 100 components.
- **A layered folding screen.** Apple describes more than ten ultrathin layers and adhesives.
- **Two batteries, not one.** Cells of 7.5 Wh and 11.6 Wh, for 19.1 Wh total.
- **Glue you can switch off.** Both batteries sit on electrically releasable adhesive.
- **A simpler logic board.** It is single-layer, unlike the double-layer boards Apple has used in iPhones since the iPhone 8 (the XR and SE were exceptions).

Getting all of this apart took five different screwdriver types. That is not a friendly number for home repair, but the overall picture is better than any foldable iFixit has scored before.

### How does an iPhone that folds actually work inside?

A foldable phone has to solve three problems that a normal phone does not: bend a screen thousands of times, split its electronics across two halves, and keep dirt out of a moving joint. Here is how the Duo handles each.

#### The screen is a stack, not a sheet of glass

Glass does not fold, so a foldable screen is a sandwich of thin, flexible layers glued together. Apple says the Duo's folding display has more than ten of them. The top surface is a nano-texture cover sitting on a flexible polymer layer, and that layer can be replaced without replacing the OLED panel underneath, according to iFixit.

That detail matters for your wallet. The cover layer is the part your fingernails, keys and pocket grit attack every day. Swapping it costs $49 without AppleCare or $19 with it, versus $999 for the whole inner display.

#### The hinge is a tiny gearbox

The hinge is built from gears, springs and linked metal joints, more than 100 components by Apple's count, packed into the spine of the phone. In iFixit's dust tests it collected less visible dust than the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold. The bad news: enough still got in to make it crunch.

#### Two halves, one charger

The Duo carries two battery cells. Only one side has charging hardware, so power and data cross the hinge on an accordion-pleated flex cable, a ribbon folded like a paper fan so it can stretch and compress as the phone opens and shuts. One of the two batteries charges through that cable.

#### Batteries that let go on command

Phone batteries are normally held in with stretch-release tape or stubborn glue, and prying them out risks a puncture. The Duo uses adhesive that releases when you run a small electric current through it, using iFixit's VoltClip with a FixHub, or a plain 9V battery. Both cells are also protected by metal shells.

### How repairable is the iPhone Duo?

Better than any foldable iFixit has scored, still not easy. The 5/10 score is provisional, and iFixit says it will finalize it once replacement parts are on sale.

The good parts are real. Batteries come out with electricity instead of force. The cover layer on the folding screen can be replaced on its own. The single-layer logic board is simpler to work on than the stacked boards in recent iPhones. And when iFixit removed the outer display, it came off with its trim intact.

The bad parts are also real. Five screwdriver types is a lot of tooling. The hinge is a 100-plus-part mechanism that already crunched with dust in testing. And the inner display, the part most exposed on any foldable, costs $999 to replace out of warranty.

<table>
<thead><tr><th>Repair</th><th>Cost (out of warranty)</th></tr></thead>
<tbody>
<tr><td>Inner folding display</td><td>$999</td></tr>
<tr><td>Folding display cover layer, no AppleCare</td><td>$49</td></tr>
<tr><td>Folding display cover layer, with AppleCare</td><td>$19</td></tr>
</tbody>
</table>

Read that table as a buying instruction. The cover layer is built to be the cheap, replaceable part, and the OLED underneath is the expensive one. The $19 fix only helps if the damage stays in the top layer.

### iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8: which is better?

On price, Apple undercut expectations. The Duo starts at $1,999, while IDC had expected $2,500, [The Next Web reported](https://thenextweb.com/news/apple-iphone-duo-foldable-1999-price). Samsung's Galaxy Z Fold8 Ultra costs $2,099, so the iPhone is $100 cheaper at the starting line. Storage runs from 256GB to 2TB.

On the teardown bench, the Duo came out ahead on the two things iFixit compared directly:

- **Dust.** The Duo's hinge gathered less visible dust than both the Galaxy Z Fold8 and the Pixel 11 Pro Fold, though it was not dust-proof.
- **Screen removal.** The Fold8's inner-screen trim crumbled as iFixit took it off. The Duo's outer display and trim came off intact.

Those are signs of build quality and repair friendliness, not proof that one phone will outlast the other. The sources we used do not include Samsung's full spec sheet, battery claims or repair pricing, so we are not going to guess at a spec-by-spec scorecard. What we can say is what Apple is bringing to the fight:

- **Screens:** a 7.6-inch inner display, about 50% larger than the iPhone 18 Pro Max's, and a 5.4-inch outer display with about 90% of the iPhone 18 Pro's screen area.
- **Chip:** the A20 Pro, the same chip as the $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro. Apple claims up to 35% better sustained performance than the iPhone 17 Pro. (For why phone chips now matter beyond raw speed, see our explainer on [on-device NPUs](/radar/next-gen-silicon-edge-computing-on-device-npus).)
- **Battery:** up to 31 hours of video on the inner screen, 44 hours on the outer, 24 hours of mixed use, and about 50% charge in roughly 20 minutes wired or 30 minutes on MagSafe or Qi2.
- **Build:** grade 5 titanium, IP68, Ceramic Shield 2 on the front.
- **Cameras:** dual 48MP rear cameras (Fusion Main and Fusion Ultra Wide), with 4K120 Dolby Vision video.

There are trade-offs Apple fans should know before ordering. The Duo has no Face ID; Touch ID lives in the side button. It is eSIM only, so there is no physical SIM tray. It comes in two colours, star white and night sky.

What about the crease? Neither the teardown nor the launch coverage we drew on measures it, so this is one to judge with your own eyes in a store.

### Is the iPhone Fold worth it?

Whether Apple's new iPhone foldable is worth it depends on which kind of buyer you are.

**Buy it if** you already live in Apple's ecosystem, want a tablet-sized screen in your pocket, and will pay for AppleCare. The teardown suggests this is the most repairable foldable iFixit has tested, the battery life claims are strong, and the $19 cover-layer swap with AppleCare makes the most common kind of screen wear cheap to fix.

**Wait if** you are rough on phones, work in dusty places, or will not buy AppleCare. A hinge that crunches with dust and a $999 inner screen are a bad pairing for a phone that lives in a toolbox or a beach bag. Waiting also means the repair score gets finalized and real-world durability reports arrive.

**Look at Samsung or Google if** you are already on Android, or the Duo's eSIM-only design is a dealbreaker. Switching platforms for a first-generation foldable is a big ask, and on the evidence here the Duo's lead is about repair and build details, not a feature you cannot get elsewhere.

**Skip it if** you mostly want the A20 Pro chip and a great camera. The $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro has the same chip for $800 less, without a hinge to worry about.

### What to watch next

Three things will settle whether the iPhone Fold is a smart buy or an expensive first draft.

1. **The final repair score.** iFixit will lock in its number once Apple sells replacement parts. The 5/10 is provisional, so it could move either way.
2. **Hinge durability over months.** The dust crunch showed up in a teardown lab. Owner reports from beaches, building sites and coat pockets will show whether it matters in daily life.
3. **Wider availability.** Sales expand to 28 more markets from October 30, which will bring more buyers, more reviews and a clearer picture of how the Duo holds up against Samsung's and Google's foldables.

## Frequently asked questions

### Is the iPhone Duo worth it?
It is worth it if you are already an iPhone user, want a 7.6-inch screen that folds into your pocket, and will pay for AppleCare. If you are rough on phones or mainly want Apple's fastest chip, the $1,199 iPhone 18 Pro has the same A20 Pro for $800 less, with no hinge or $999 folding screen to worry about.

### How repairable is the iPhone Duo?
iFixit gave it a provisional 5 out of 10, the highest score it has given any foldable so far. The batteries release with an electric current, the folding screen's cover layer can be swapped on its own, and the logic board is single-layer. Against that, the teardown needed five screwdriver types, and the inner display costs $999 to replace out of warranty.

### Does the iPhone Duo have a crease?
The sources we used do not measure the crease, so we cannot give you a verdict on how visible it is. What we know is how the screen is built: more than ten ultrathin layers and adhesives, topped by a nano-texture cover on a flexible polymer layer that can be replaced without replacing the OLED. Check it in person before you buy.

### iPhone Duo vs Galaxy Z Fold 8: which is better?
On the evidence available, the Duo leads on repair and build details. Its hinge gathered less dust than the Fold8's in iFixit's tests, and its screen came off intact while the Fold8's inner-screen trim crumbled. It also starts at $1,999 versus $2,099 for the Fold8 Ultra. Android users should still look at Samsung.
